Life as we know it...is BUSY.

I have been busy with art classes and applying what I have learned to my painting. Here is the last few paintings fresh of the easel.
 Alberta Wildrose
12*12inches
on Canvas
Sold
In this painting I was applying the color theory I learned in an art class with Tammy Taylor. And I think it worked well. It has enough tonal and hue value to make it interesting.

Brown-Eyed Susan
1*2 Feet
Oil on Canvas

In the Brown-Eyed Susan I applied the color theory I learned from Sharon Hazen. I was also introduced to complex composition called the Golden Means.I had fun with it.
These paintings were painted with a brush in stead of a painting knife. I figured out a way to keep my brushes useful without spending a lot of time cleaning them. Cleaning brushes are my nemesis.

I also signed up for The Whyte Ave Art Walk again this year. Can not wait!

Butterfly and Brown Eyed Susan

Butterfly and Brown Eyed Susan.
Oil on Canvas
16*20"
Sold

This was the painting I was working on at Art Walk. My neighbor was watching as I painted and really enjoyed it. She just had to have it.:)
So, if you like it and wanted something similar please do not hesitate to speak up. I will gladly paint something similar for you.

(I apologize for the quality of the picture. My camera died and all that I had to my disposal was my Phone Camera)

Marsh Marigold Buds

Marsh Marigold Buds
Oil On Gallery Wrap Canvas
16*20

100% of this painting will be donated to Ratanak and Place of Rescue, in Cambodia. Their primary purpose is to prevent and protect children from the horrors of human trafficking.

Through the Open Door Art Exhibition will be held from March 3 -31, with an opening reception March 10th at the  Mad Platter Bistro, 20 McLeod Ave, Spruce Grove.

I  chose to paint Marsh Marigold buds. These flower buds are the fruit of the mother plant and are being protected by leaves. As the buds grow bigger into flowers the mother plants’ leafs opens to let them bloom.  The connection here is to protect the young, life is precious and everybody has a right to a fair chance.  Children need protection and guidance to grow and bloom. Victims of human trafficking need so much more, but there is still hope for them to bloom with the help of Ratanak and Place of Rescue.

Sunflower Color Celebration

Sunflower Color Celebration
13*13 (on 1inch profile, this means it can stand on its own and does not need framing)
Oil on Canvas with Painting Knife.
$125/sold

I enjoy painting sunflowers from my garden! It is actually amazing to see that there are some left; the squirrels ate them when they were small. Then we had a windstorm and they were blown over and started growing like vines. One is completely horizontal and still flowering. They had to overcome one more challenge: then the neighbors' horse found that if he stretches his neck just so, that he can help himself to a tasty treat.
I was very wise to plant plenty.

Protea

Protea
11*14"
Oil on Canvas
$100

The Protea is the National flower of South Africa. Here is a little extract from Wikipedia:

Etymology

The genus Protea was named in 1735 by Carl Linnaeus after the Greek god Proteus, who could change his form at will, because proteas have such a wide variety of forms.

Taxonomy

The Proteaceae family to which proteas belong is an ancient one. Its ancestors grew in Gondwanaland, 300 million years ago. Proteaceae is divided into two subfamilies: the Proteoideae, best represented in southern Africa, and the Grevilleoideae, concentrated in Australia and South America and the other smaller segments of Gondwanaland that are now part of eastern Asia. Africa shares only one genus with Madagascar, whereas South America and Australia share many common genera — this indicates they separated from Africa before they separated from each other.

Distribution

Most protea occur south of the Limpopo River. However, Protea kilimanjaro is found in the chaparral zone of Mount Kenya National Park. 92% of the species occur only in the Cape Floristic Region, a narrow belt of mountainous coastal land from Clanwilliam to Grahamstown, South Africa. The extraordinary richness and diversity of species characteristic of the Cape Flora is thought to be caused in part by the diverse landscape where populations can become isolated from each other and in time develop into separate species.

Rose Hip Study.

Oil on Canvas

$240 (Sold)

This a rose hip of the Alberta Wild Rose, the picture I used as reference was taken in the fall after the hips have dried out and became all wrinkly. Did you know that you can eat them and also the leaves of the Wild Rose itself?
Here is a picture of a Alberta Wild rose.

Painting Knife Paintings

Today I posted my Palette Knife paintings. Flowers have always been my favorite subject matter. I did realize that abstract flowers are more dynamic than flowers painted in a more realistic manner.
What do you think?

Ready, Set and Go!

I am super excited because my nephew (and his parents) are comeing to visit this weekend. I get to meet him for the first time! He is about 5 months old now!
I will post pictures of him as soon as I can. He is adorable, and I think he is the cutest nephew anybody could have. I might be a little biased tho. So do not take my word for it.
In the mean time I will post some pictures of a botanical study that I have been busy with since spring.
Enjoy!
